Lliam's first canoe trip

Since before Lliam was born, Will and I have been dreaming of taking him canoeing. This year, we thought he was finally old enough, so we took him on a short trip to Del Valle. I woke up at 6am that morning to the sounds of almost howling winds. If you know me, you know how much I dislike the wind. Fortunately, it was calm up at Del Valle, according to the Ranger on the phone.

It was indeed calmer down there, but there was definitely a headwind. We were both relieved that Lliam was eager to climb in the canoe. You never can tell with a volatile 3-year-old in tow.  We paddled up the lake for an hour or so against a strong headwind, finally pulling into a calmer cove. This was the same place where Will and I had hiked to several summers before with a friend on a 110 degree afternoon. Needless to say, we swam back most of the way that day.

We took a little pit stop in the cove, and Lliam even tested the waters.

 ...Will tested them out too.

When it was time to head back, the headwind that had been so strong before started to waffle, but not before we got to benefit from it by doing a few minutes of "sailing."

I know this looks hokey, but it actually works if the wind is directly at your back. Since this first adventure, we have taken Lliam to Shadow Cliffs (a much smaller lake about 7 minutes from our house) twice on week nights. This is shaping up to be a summer tradition that Will could scarcely picture when he bought this Canoe about 10 years or so ago. He got it for a steal while working at REI, because it had a big gash on the side from shipping. He patched it up nicely, and you'd hardly know it was there!
